The award recognises initiative in school sport that is deemed to be exceptional in providing quality sporting opportunities for secondary school students.

A successful Kiwisport project involving student leadership in designing and delivering modified sporting opportunities during lunchtimes in schools. 4 schools with over 230 participants are currently on board with 3 others for 2017. The project is built on  KiwiSport funding and individual schools can access up to $3,000 for their project.

The KiwiSport Initiative Project was recognised because it included:

  • student voice
  • accessible opportunities in modified sport in less formal settings
  • student leadership
  • encouragement of previously non-participating students
  • leverage of the KiwiSport resource for financial support
