Phoenix Burke – Active Teens
Background
Phoenix Burke grew up on a farm in Warkworth and loves the lifestyle that it offers. She currently attends Mahurangi College and really enjoys her school. Unfortunately for Phoenix, she has faced a long struggle with her weight. She lacked ideas on how to fix the problem and decided to try the Active Teens programme in Mahurangi. Although it’s difficult, it is so worth it in the end. Putting up with the pain of a hard training session is so worth it when you’re looking back at how you used to look, compared to what you look like now. Always keep that in mind, I remember how crap I felt about myself and how unfit I was, but never giving up on those sessions, and with the support of Liz and Megan (Active Teens staff) made it possible. Also, that you can do it. Everyone has it in them, you just need the will power and the determination to stick to it and see it through, that is something that only you can do. No one else can help you with that. And most importantly have fun in what you’re doing, if you’re not having fun you’re not going to enjoy it. So find exercises that you find fun and you can enjoy and you will love it.Solution
Phoenix attended the pre programme consultation with the Active Teens facilitator and put together a 10 week plan. She admits that she was nervous starting the classes but “quickly grew to enjoy them”. The classes were held at Warkworth Fitness Centre. Her favourite part was the boxing classes as well as the spin classes. She also says she found “the nutrition components very helpful”. Phoenix really started to grow amongst the group and as the weeks went on she took on more of a leadership role. “I found the workouts hard in the beginning but the more I did, the easier it became” Phoenix says as she recalls the exercise sessions. It was evident over the course of the programme that Phoenix was on track to meet her goals she had set prior to commencing. Results / Impact
During the 10 week Active Teens Programme, Phoenix managed to lose an amazing 3.8kgs of body fat. She cut 4 minutes off of her 2km run time. Phoenix also doubled all of her strength test exercises. Her nutrition has improved dramatically and she has far more energy. Conclusion
She has now taken it a step further and joined the Warkworth Fitness Centre. She is focused on keeping her weight at a good level and says “there is still a bit to do”. Phoenix is now looking forward to the Christmas holiday period where she is heading to Queenstown for a vacation and to see in the New Year. We wish you the best of luck Phoenix and a massive congratulations on your successes so far.
