About us: Basketball New Zealand (BBNZ) is the national body for the rapidly growing sport of basketball in Aotearoa. Our role is to develop, grow and promote basketball and participants of the game.

The Role: We are seeking a proactive and highly organised Participation Event Lead to oversee the planning and delivery of a new basketball event series that promotes basketball and physical activity for tamariki aged 5–12.

This is a part-time, 10-month fixed-term role ideal for someone with strong project management skills, the ability to work flexible hours, a passion for youth sport, and experience in community engagement and event delivery. Hours per week will be between 10-20 but this will vary depending on event schedule. The role will oversee the pre, during, and post-delivery of events for tamariki that promote physical activity and play.

Ideally this role will be based in Wellington, but for the right person we are flexible in considering other New Zealand based locations.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Leading the planning and delivery of basketball events nationwide, overseeing logistics, venue permits, budgeting, health & safety, and internal coordination.

  • Acting as the on-the-ground event lead, managing event-day operations.

  • Building strong relationships with local basketball associations, schools, and communities to boost participation and create lasting grassroots impact.

  • Supporting marketing and communications efforts, helping to promote events and grow engagement in community basketball.

  • Designing and delivering inclusive basketball experiences that reflect diverse genders, abilities, and cultural backgrounds.

  • Managing registrations via the national database.

  • Gathering and analysing feedback and preparing post-event reports.

     

As the successful candidate, you will have:

  • Proven experience in sports administration or event delivery, ideally with knowledge of basketball and primary school sport/programming.

  • A strong understanding of best-practice sport experiences for Tamariki, with a commitment to inclusive and community-focused delivery.

  • Excellent attention to detail, time management, and the ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure.

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with stakeholders, staff, and volunteers.

  • Confidence with Microsoft Office, with preferred experience in database or registration systems.

  • Flexibility and reliability, with a full driver’s licence, willingness to travel as required, and availability to work flexible hours as needed.
