Harbour Sport is seeking a Healthy Active Learning Advisor to work alongside schools and kura across the North Shore and Rodney communities, helping create healthy, active learning environments that support positive wellbeing outcomes for tamariki.

About the Role

As a Healthy Active Learning Advisor, you will work directly with selected primary and intermediate schools and kura across the North Harbour region and contribute to a nationwide initiative. Healthy Active Learning is a joint government initiative between Sport NZ, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health and Health NZ – Te Whatu Ora.

As part of the Healthy Active Learning initiative, this role plays a critical part in creating sustainable, healthy and active school environments that support the wellbeing and hauora of tamariki and rangatahi. Working alongside Boards of Trustees, principals, senior leaders and teachers, the Healthy Active Learning Advisor provides strategic support and guidance to help schools and kura strengthen their systems, practices and culture around healthy eating, drinking and quality physical activity.

This is a relationship-focused and systems-change role requiring strong educational knowledge, facilitation skills, and the ability to influence and support change at multiple levels.

Key Responsibilities

This is a relationship-focused role that supports schools and kura to create sustainable systems. Success requires strong educational knowledge, facilitation skills, and the ability to build capability and influence positive change at all levels of the school community.

  • Build trusted relationships with school and kura leaders, teachers, kaiako and wider education partners.
  • Provide tailored advice, coaching and capability-building support to schools and kura.
  • Support schools to strengthen physical activity, sport, play and wellbeing opportunities for tamariki.
  • Facilitate planning and implementation processes that create sustainable organisational change.
  • Promote culturally responsive and equitable approaches that recognise the diverse needs of local communities.
  • Work collaboratively with Healthy Active Learning partners and community stakeholders.
  • Collect, monitor and report on programme outcomes and impact.
  • Contribute to regional and national Healthy Active Learning priorities and initiatives.

About You

You are an experienced relationship-builder who understands the education sector and is passionate about improving outcomes for tamariki through physical activity and wellbeing.

You will ideally bring:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in education, health, physical education, sport, recreation or a related field.
  • Experience working within schools, kura or education settings.
  • Knowledge of The New Zealand Curriculum and/or Te Marautanga o Aotearoa.
  • Strong understanding of Health and Physical Education curriculum and quality physical activity approaches.
  • Experience leading or supporting organisational change and influencing stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation and relationship management skills.
  • Understanding of equity-focused practice and community engagement.
  • Knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and confidence applying its principles in practice.
  • Experience working with Māori, Pacific, Asian and other diverse communities would be highly valued.

A full New Zealand driver’s licence is required, as regular travel throughout the region is part of the role.
