Harbour School Sport

On Wednesday the 4th of July, the North Shore Events Centre saw 112 selected students from 17 schools attend the first ever student leadership day, organised by Harbour Sport.

The day involved exciting talks from New Zealand sporting legends: DJ Forbes (NZ Rugby Sevens), Barbara Kendall (3X Olympic Windsurfing medallist), Jenny-May Clarkson (Silver Ferns Netball commonwealth medallist), and Keegan Pitcher (Para athletic medallist).

Students took part in various activities and reflected on the presentations given by the guest speakers in order to develop and equip them with improved leadership skills.

“I’m a big fan of leadership, especially with the younger generations. The facilitators and guest speakers touched on some real good topics and a lot of them were from real life experiences so I think the kids got a lot out of it”, said DJ Forbes -New Zealand Sevens legend. “It was cool for me to be here as an MC, I was just as excited as some of the students to hear the guest speakers stories; so It’s a great initiative and it’s only going to get bigger and better. Its one thing I think a lot of the other provinces and organisations will try to replicate.

Harbour Sport would like to thank their major major sponsorship partner, D3Tape, for their contribution towards making this event a huge success!

We would also like to thank our other sponsorship partners: Massey University, North Shore Events Centre, Dole New Zealand, Lone Star NZ, Hibiscus And Bays Local Board, Tass Print, Event Cinemas Albany, and Harbour Volleyball.

2016 Harbour Secondary School Sport Participation Snapshot

The data represents key highlights from the New Zealand Secondary School Sport Census which schools complete on an annual basis.

The data includes all students that have had a “meaningful engagement” in school sport:

  • A student representing their school in a sport (e.g. pulling on their school jersey)
  • OR a student has taken part in a sport provided over a period of six weeks or more
  • OR a student has participated in a project that is KiwiSport funded
  • OR a student has played for a club (or another school in a composite team) as the school had no teams and has a close working relationship with.
