Māori Community Activator – Te Oranga Kaiora

Te Oranga Kaiora is Harbour Sport’s kaupapa Māori movement and wellbeing programme, designed to uplift tamariki and rangatahi through mātauranga Māori, hauora, and culturally grounded physical activity. Rooted in kotahitanga, whanaungatanga and mana motuhake, Te Oranga Kaiora empowers young people to thrive through movement, identity, connection, and culture. As a Māori Community Activator, you will carry this kaupapa into kura, marae and Māori community spaces – helping create safe, joyful environments where our next generation can stand tall in who they are.

About the Role

Harbour Sport is looking for a passionate Māori Community Activator to lead and deliver Te Oranga Kaiora sessions and cycle safety programmes in kura kaupapa Māori and Māori community settings. This role is all about uplifting tamariki and rangatahi, strengthening whanaungatanga, and creating culturally grounded, fun, and empowering spaces where young people thrive through movement, identity, and hauora. You will also support cultural capability within Harbour Sport by contributing to Te Ao Māori upskilling, wānanga, and organisational cultural leadership – growing a supportive team environment that lives our values.

What You’ll Do
  • Deliver inclusive, engaging Te Oranga Kaiora sessions grounded in Te Ao Māori, tikanga, Māori movement, and hauora principles.
  • Create safe, empowering environments where tamariki and rangatahi build confidence, identity, and wellbeing.
  • Deliver cycle skills and safety sessions in kura and community settings using recognised safe riding practices.
  • Confidently integrate karakia, waiata, tikanga and Te Reo Māori into everyday delivery.
  • Build strong relationships with kura kaupapa Māori, iwi, hapū, marae, whānau and Māori community organisations.
  • Plan sessions, organise logistics, and manage equipment needs.
  • Capture simple data, attendance, and reflections to help grow programme quality.
  • Support Harbour Sport kaimahi with cultural learning, wānanga, and reo/tikanga guidance.
  • Uphold manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, and cultural safety in all interactions.

What You’ll Bring

Essential

  • Fluent or highly confident Te Reo Māori (kōrero, facilitation, and written basics).
  • Strong understanding and practice of tikanga and kawa in Māori spaces (kura, marae, iwi/hapū).
  • Experience connecting with tamariki and rangatahi in fun, strengths-based ways.
  • Confidence planning and delivering culturally responsive programmes.
  • Warm, authentic relationship-building with kura, whānau, and Māori community leaders.
  • Ability to capture basic data and reflect on programme learnings.
  • A strong values fit grounded in rangatiratanga, manaakitanga, and whanaungatanga.

Desirable

  • Cycle skills instructor accreditation (or willingness to complete within 3 months).
  • Digital skills (MS365, simple forms/surveys, basic comms tools).
  • Confidence speaking or facilitating in both Te Reo Māori and English.
  • Knowledge of local Māori networks, PARS ecosystem or community sport sector.
  • Creativity in designing culturally resonant activities and resources.
