Activasian Connector

BACKGROUND
The regional ActivAsian initiative is developed in partnership with Regional ActivAsian Partners – Aktive, CLM
Community Sport, Harbour Sport, Sport Auckland, and Sport Waitākere. As Auckland’s only Asian
engagement initiative under Sport New Zealand’s approaches, ActivAsian is dedicated to enhancing equitable
access and connectedness for Asian communities in Tāmaki Makaurau through Play, Active Recreation, and
Sport (PARS). We aim to achieve three strategic successes:
• Inclusive Environment – A welcoming and safe environment for Asian communities
• Empowered Leadership – Asian communities are resourced, upskilled, and confident to lead for
success
• Active Participation – Asian communities are participating and socially connected within their local
area

JOB PURPOSE
The purpose of the ActivAsian Community Connector is to support schools and communities to identify, plan
and implement opportunities for quality play, sport and physical activity experiences for Asian tamariki and
rangatahi. This includes developing and maintaining meaningful relationships with schools, and community
health and physical activity providers to ensure a connected and coordinated approach to health and
wellbeing outcomes for specifically Asian tamariki and rangatahi who are:
• young women and girls
• newcomers, which include former refugees, new migrants and international students
• from the Rainbow community

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Work in partnership with a cluster of schools and their local communities to:
• Deliver and implement required outcomes as per ActivAsian initiative and funder expectations
• Work collaboratively across the CLM Community Sport team and the wider ActivAsian Regional team
• Identify and consult with relevant Asian communities that support tamariki and rangatahi
participation in physical activity
• Build and maintain meaningful relationships with key stakeholders within identified schools, key
agencies, networks and wider community
Position Description: ActivAsian Connector
• Scope and develop relevant insights on Asian tamariki and rangatahi demographic that supports an
evidence-based approach to future decision-making
• Identify opportunities that seek to increase the cultural competency and capability of stakeholders to
meet the needs of Asian tamariki and rangatahi
• Support schools and communities to develop, plan and implement initiatives that promote ongoing
opportunities for quality play, active recreation and sport experiences
• Ensure appropriate health and safety/risk management processes are considered to provide a
culturally safe environment for Asian tamariki, rangatahi and whanau
• Support local communities, including local boards, to provide quality play, sport and physical activity
opportunities
• Develop innovative and effective programmes that increase Asian communities’ equitable access to
and participation in play, active recreation, and sports.
• Promotes, markets, and communicates about all ActivAsian activities.
• Facilitate and foster ongoing collaboration between schools, sports clubs and community
Additionally, you will:
• Ensure the Treaty of Waitangi and its principles of Partnership, Protection and Participation are
acknowledged and reflected in the implementation of all work.
• Safeguarding – Adhere to and advocate for safeguarding (child protection) policies and procedures to
ensure all tamariki and rangatahi engagement is within safe and inclusive environments (online and
physical).
• Communication – Maintain effective communication between all partners and wider play, active
recreation and sport sectors.

REPORTING
Prepare detailed progress reports on behalf of CLM Community Sport as and when required.

Establish and maintain effective relationships with key staff from stakeholders including:
• Delivery partners: Harbour Sport, Sport Auckland, and Sport Waitākere
• Selected primary and intermediate school principals, senior leaders, boards of trustees
• Aktive
• Asian community groups/organisations
• Settlement support agencies
• Regional/National sports organisations
• Funding agencies and sponsors
• Sports clubs
• Community coordinators
• Auckland Council and local boards
• Outdoor recreation providers

PERSON SPECIFICATIONS
Experience and Knowledge
Essential:
• Understanding of the systems, structures and operating models that underpin play, active recreation
and sport across Aotearoa.
• Knowledge and understanding of the systems and structures that guide and influence schools.
• Knowledge and understanding of how the community sport and education sectors interact to deliver
play, sport and physical activity opportunities
Position Description: ActivAsian Connector
• Knowledge and understanding of the holistic value of play, active recreation and sport, and its
contribution to the wellbeing of tamariki and rangatahi.
• Knowledge of the wider social and political context in which Regional Sport Trusts operate.
• Knowledge and understanding of culturally responsive and sustaining ways of engaging with Asian
communities.
• Experience in planning, coordinating, prioritising and completing multiple tasks and projects to meet
deadlines and produce quality results.
• Ability to converse in and/or understand an Asian language i.e. Hindi, Mandarin, etc.
• Full and clean driver’s license and full working rights in Aotearoa.
Desirable:
• A relevant tertiary qualification that is related to Community Development, Education and/or Sport
and Recreation or equivalent.
• A minimum of 1-year experience in working in a community or school setting.
• Experience in planning, coordinating and implementing quality play, active recreation and sport
opportunities and experiences for tamariki and/or rangatahi.
• Knowledge and understanding of the fundamental differences between play, active recreation
and sport.
• Knowledge and understanding of the Health and Physical Education learning area as part of the New
Zealand Curriculum
• Current first aid certificate.
