Waka Ama Aotearoa NZ – Whaikaha Lead
Waka Ama Aotearoa New Zealand (WAANZ) is seeking a passionate and experienced Whaikaha Lead to provide leadership and support the implementation of our Whaikaha Action Plan. This role will help strengthen inclusive practices and create positive waka ama experiences for tāngata whaikaha at a community and participation level.
This is a part-time position (20 hours per week/0.5 FTE) on a two-year fixed-term contract. The role can be based in our Auckland office or undertaken remotely with the right candidate, with flexibility to travel as required.
About the Role
You will work collaboratively across the organisation and with key partners to:

Lead the implementation of the WAANZ Whaikaha Action Plan (Years 2–4)

Ensure tāngata whaikaha are active partners in planning, decision-making and evaluation

Build capability and confidence across the waka ama workforce to deliver inclusive experiences

Develop practical resources and tools that support inclusion

Build strong relationships with regions, clubs, disability organisations and sector partners

Support initiatives that increase participation opportunities for tamariki, rangatahi and adult tāngata whaikaha

Identify funding and partnership opportunities to support programme delivery

Foster collaborative and co-designed approaches that place participant voice at the centre
About You
You will bring:

Experience leading or managing projects or programmes in sport, community development, disability inclusion or a related area

Strong relationship-building and communication skills

Experience working collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and communities

A commitment to creating inclusive environments and improving participation experiences

An understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the importance of culturally responsive practice

A relevant tertiary qualification, or equivalent experience
Knowledge of, or connections within, the disability sector and/or the waka ama community would be highly regarded.
